Door Pottery is hand-thrown art pottery by Scott Draves of Madison, Wisconsin. A founder of Ephraim Faience Pottery in 1996, Scott left Ephraim after five years because he did not desire to run a large operation. Scott’s mission follows the philosophy of the old arts & crafts movement, where creativity and handmade quality were the key to success, not production numbers. His goal is to emulate the creativity and artistic connection of small studios like Overbeck and Grueby by being involved in the creation of each piece of quality handmade art that leaves his studio.
Studio Pottery
The lifeblood of our studio is creativity.
Having the opportunity to stretch artistically is vital. Studio pieces are one-of-a-kind works that reflect the creative individuality of the artist. They are signed and include the words “Studio Pottery”. Beginning in 2007, we added our stamp – the distinctive Door Pottery three-gingko leaf logo. Because these special creations are not part of our regular production line, they are not available for order. Once a piece is sold, it’s gone.
Paul Revere/SEG Pottery
At the turn of the previous century, Hull House in Boston was home to a girls club focused on teaching life skills and cultural enrichment. Their Saturday group of young women concentrated on making and decorating pottery to be sold in the Bowl Shop of the Paul Revere Pottery. The charm and whimsy of Saturday Evening Girls (SEG) pottery has enchanted collectors for a century. Door Pottery has used traditional themes for this line of pottery inspired by the Saturday Evening Girls.
Porcelain
Inspired by the works of Adelaide Robineau, Kyle Kreigh and Door Pottery have created a line of pottery that features exquisite carving, beautiful crystalline glazes and elegant form.
Catfish River Arts & Antiques is proud to be the “Company Store” for Scott Draves and Door Pottery. This means Catfish River always has a tremendous selection of Door Pottery in stock. In addition, we carry experimental shapes and glazes, apprentice-made pots, and seconds (Scott is a perfectionist and more often than not it is difficult to see why he believes the piece is imperfect).
One great benefit of our relationship with Scott is our annual “Door Pottery Seconds Sale”, usually held during the first weekend of November at Catfish River in Stoughton. Scott will bring down literally hundreds of irregular and/or unique pieces saved throughout the year. The best way to enjoy this event is to attend the unadvertised Friday night reception, talk with Scott and his co-workers, have a few beverages and snacks, and get first crack at owning a unique piece at an incredible price. Sorry, but because we have no idea what Scott will bring down for the event, there can be no web sales of these pieces until after the weekend.
